AutoCAD Electrical 2006 - Overview

For more accurate electrical controls design, there’s a logical choice: AutoCAD Electrical.

If you design machines or products that move, electrical controls are probably a key component of your design requirements. But until now, design teams have had to rely on generic applications to manually lay out electrical schematics. Well, not anymore. Built on the AutoCAD® platform, AutoCAD® Electrical is the leading application built specifically for designing electrical control systems. It will help you design 2D industrial control systems faster and more accurately and can share electrical schematic information with Autodesk Inventor® Professional. With tools that automate key control system design tasks, your organization can slash the chances of error, accelerate production, and dramatically improve product quality. With features like these, this innovative product is the logical choice for electrical controls design.

Reduce Complex or Repetitive Tasks

Simply define the I/O assignments for your project in a spreadsheet program, and AutoCAD Electrical automatically creates schematics. The software reads in the spreadsheet data, accurately draws the ladders according to your drawing configuration, adds the I/O modules, and inserts the addresses and description text. Then AutoCAD Electrical adds the component and terminal symbols to their proper I/O points. What used to take you days or even weeks now takes just a few seconds!

Once your electrical design is complete, you can automatically generate reports such as bill of materials (BOM) and From/To wire lists-one at a time or simultaneously. A dramatic improvement over traditional AutoCAD methods, automatic report generation drastically reduces the time needed to create reports, and helps minimize potential errors.

AutoCAD Electrical also includes an open and flexible API that you can use to create simplified, custom frontend interfaces or automated workflows to integrate with your existing business and engineering systems.

Reduce Errors

Manually assigning wire numbers and component tags is a tedious, time-consuming, and error-prone task. Let AutoCAD Electrical do it for you: the system inserts sequential and reference-based numbers and automatically renumbers elements as your design or requirements change. So you can have thousands of wire numbers and component tags, and the software makes sure each one is unique.

When you need to place a wire number, AutoCAD Electrical automatically searches along the wire for a clear spot to do it. If it doesn't find one, it looks for a logical spot away from the wire, places the tag, and draws a leader back to the wire. Think of all the time this will save you, and all the mistakes you'll avoid.

Increase Drafting Productivity

Now let's talk about the panel, the physical representation of the schematic. Using AutoCAD Electrical to create panel layout drawings is simple and provides an immediate way to check that no components are missing. The software creates an electronic link between the logical representation of the device in the schematic and the panel drawings. So when something changes in the schematic, it automatically changes in the panel as well. Plus you can add nonschematic items to your layout, such as wire duct and mounting hardware, and they will automatically be included in the panel's BOM report.

AutoCAD Electrical also significantly reduces your chances of assigning too many contacts to a relay. It sets up a parent/child relationship between coils and contacts, keeping track of how many contacts are assigned to any device. Real-time cross-referencing is displayed on the drawing, so not only will you see any potential errors, but also AutoCAD Electrical will alert you when you've reached the limit. Catching or preventing even one contact error can save you the cost of the software.

Communicate and Manage Design Data

AutoCAD Electrical creates DWG files that any AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT® software can view and edit. When an edited file returns to you, you can quickly run a report and view the changes that have been made. AutoCAD Electrical also makes it easy to work with users of Autodesk Inventor Professional by enabling you to pass complete cable and wire information to the cable and harness functionality in that application.

You can also share AutoCAD Electrical designs through the Internet. The software takes your drawings, or even your entire project, and automatically creates the HTML pages and links needed to post your designs to the web. Members of your extended team can drag the drawings directly from the web into an AutoCAD sheet set or work on the files in any other DWG-based program.

Integrated with AutoCAD Electrical, Autodesk® Vault organizes your design data and protects it from inadvertent changes. This easy-to-use data management tool makes work-in-process data more accessible and reusable, while avoiding the versioning problems inherent in sharing files among workgroups. Most importantly, Autodesk Vault is integrated with your Autodesk design applications, making data management easier and more efficient.
