Engineering Document Management Solution
Client Background
Based in Matawan, NJ, Maser Consulting has five offices throughout New
Jersey and New York, serving both the private and public sector. The firm
provides a wide range of services for public works, environmental management,
geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, highway and bridge design,
traffic and transportation engineering, site development, surveying, landscape
architecture and construction administration.

The Problem
As you can imagine, a company that performs all of the services mentioned
above generates a lot of design drawings and has many ongoing projects.
Their Engineering and Survey groups had thousands of drawings done in
AutoCAD and stored out on the network. Locating these drawings and managing
their revision levels was getting extremely difficult. In addition, drawings
were being copied for use as a basis for other drawing sets. This led
to confusion of which copy was which since there was a redundancy. They
needed a quick, intuitive way to create, file, view, and keep revision
history for the design drawings they were creating and modifying.
The Solution
AMS, an integration specialist for CYCO Software’s Engineering DocumentManagement
(EDM) products, offered both consulting and implementation services for
CYCO’s AutoManager WorkFlow software to help them manage their files.
The solution was to upgrade an older DOS version of the AutoManager WorkFlow
(AMW) product into a more intuitive, functional EDM system using the latest
version of the AMW software. As CYCO introduced the latest EDM product,
AutoManager Meridian in the Spring of 2000, AMS & Maser Consulting
beta tested the product and began implementing this new product. The new
Meridian product was a more secure system that offered them several client
interfaces and worked better in the enterprise Wide Area Network (WAN)
and over the Internet.
The Benefit
Since AMS has upgraded and customized the Maser Consulting EDM sofware,
the Maser Computer-Aided Design & Drafting (CADD) team was able to
more easily create and edit their AutoCAD drawing files. They were also
able to copy complete drawing sets, which are groups of drawing submittals,
to use as a basis for starting new drawing sets. Confusion over revision
control was eliminated since AMS implemented a drawing history trail and
custom revisioning feature that always kept them using the latest version
of a drawing file. Their designers and managers could easily search for
drawings based on keywords and properties associated with them such as
project name and drawing title and then preview them in a viewing window
without needing to open them in AutoCAD. Overall, Maser’s design
drawings were made available in a organized, user-friendly environment
that controlled the security and integrity of the important design files
used in their business.
