Atkinson Koven Feinberg Engineers, LLP (AKF) is a 160-person mechanical,
electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering firm headquartered
in New York with offices internationally. Their services include HVAC
Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Site Utilities
Engineering, Fire/Life Safety Engineering, Telecommunications, Building

The Problem
With all the disciplines and services that AKF provides, they have a multitude
of standard symbols and details to generate design drawings. With many
different disciplines producing drawings, it was challenging for them
to implement CADD Standards and make them readily available for all of
the CADD operators in all disciplines. As a result, drawings were often
created outside AKF format and were more difficult to edit between disciplines
by the CADD operators. AKF also required better organization and access
to their standards blocks/symbols and details. They needed a discipline-based
system that made their CADD Standards and tools available in a central
location to make the more productive.
The Solution
By organizing the AutoCAD menu system by discipline, AKF CADD operators
were more productive. AKF is able to access more quickly the tools and
commands from AutoCAD in the way. AKF is also able to more easily utilize
critical design blocks/symbols and details through the browser-based CADD
Companion solution. As a result, AKS takes advantage of CADD standards
to create drawings more accurately. AKF utilizes the ACS solution to attain
higher productivity by designing drawings via their discipline-specific
AutoCAD menu and toolbar customization.
